A Musical History

I grew up in a family that wasn't necessarily musical, but because I always wanted to tag along with my older sister,  I wound up getting my first experience singing solo on stage at the age of  4.  Then, around the age of 9, I began playing the saxophone and there was no way anyone was getting me away from music!

Growing up, my father's love of music was very, very evident!  He spent a lot of time singing, whistling or playing his harmonica around the house.  As a young saxophone player in grade/middle school, I would often come home to find my dad sitting at the kitchen table trying to play my horn.  I think his love for music and for what I did with it, made my passion grow even more.

In high school, I was a member of the Concert band, Marching band (drum major for 3 years), Jazz band, Pep band and The Saximals, a student-run saxophone quartet.  Vocally, I sang in the Concert Choir, Madrigal Singers, Jazz Choir and Show Choir.   Some of my musical achievements during my HS years include membership in:  the NCIC Choir, IMEA District Jazz and Concert Choirs, IMEA All-State Honor's Choir, Augustana Honor Choir, Augustana Honor Band and the Allerton Wind Symposium at the University of Illinois.

In college, I studied private voice with John Koch and saxophone with Jim Boitos, a couple of amazing musicians!  I performed under the direction of Dr. James Major as a member of the Concert Choir and Madrigal Singers.  I then also followed the baton movements of Dan Farris, Rene Rosas and Dr. Stephen Steele as a member of the Big Red marching Machine, Pep Band, Symphonic Bands and Symphonic Winds.

Since the college years, I've taught myself to play trumpet.  I also dabble in some flute, clarinet, horn and guitar as well as a few others.

As an adult I try to stay as musical as I possibly can.   In the last few years, I have taught both private voice and saxophone lessons to young musicians.  I have helped put together an adult vocal jazz ensemble that tries to get together and perform on occasion.  I also sing for community events as well as the usual wedding and funeral business.  Some nights, you may even find me in the area singing along with my musician friends at open mic / jam sessions.

I think it was clear from the moment I was born that music was to be my destiny.  There's not a day that goes by where I'm not doing something musical and I'm thankful for everyone, especially my family, who has supported me in all of my endeavors.

I am a classically trained singer who has been singing wedding ceremonies everywhere from Iowa to Bloomington/Normal to the Chicago suburbs.  In college, I was a Vocal Performance major at Illinois State University and was a featured soloist on a number of occasions as a member of the concert choir and madrigal singers.

With my 15 years of experience as a professional soloist, I can provide guidance and suggestions to help make your ceremony run smoothly.

Though classically trained, I am also capable of singing in many genres from pop to jazz and R&B.  If you have a specific song you would like to be sung, just ask!  As long as the music can be found, I'll most likely be able to learn and perform it for you.

Also available for funeral/memorial services.

"Betillo has an amazing talent, and he knows how to use it!  He has a beautiful singing instrument and my husband and I were beyond thrilled with the gorgeous job he did at our wedding ceremony.  Our guests raved about his beautiful voice and he brought many to tears with his Ave Maria.  I would highly, highly recommend him to anyone!  Not only does he already have a vast repertoire of song selections that he can do beautifully, but he is able to quickly adapt to new material and do it seamlessly, as though he's always had the new song selection in his back pocket.  We could not be more grateful that he was part of our big day.

Thank you, Betillo!!!"
